چکیده

Determination of iodine in biological material presents technical problems because of the large amounts of organic material present and because the concentration of iodine is often low. Many workers have used a chloric acid-digestion procedure (1), but this is tedious, and Richmond (2) found it less satisfactory for accurate measurement of fecal iodine than for determining iodine in serum or urine. Significant errors may arise from underor overdigestion. Combustion of feces is a more convenient way of liberating iodine from organic material, and seems to be a satisfactory method for accurately determining iodine both in feces and in foodstuffs (3-5). Sodium hydroxide may be used to recover the liberated iodine (5, 6). Introduction of the Model 300 Tri-Carb Sample Oxidizer (Packard Instruments Co., Downer’s Grove, Ill. 60515), designed for the preparation of samples containing tritium for liquid scintillation counting, which made use of a new automated combustion procedure (7) led us to investigate whether this equipment could conveniently be used to prepare biological samples for iodine estimation. A photometric method for the determination of alpha-amylase in blood and urine, with use of the starch-iodine color.

The use of the starch-iodine color for the estimation of ar-amylase appears to be on a sound theoretical basis. Swanson (1) has shown that in the degradation of amylose by a-amylase there is a random attack by the enzyme upon the polysaccharide chain yielding hexose units of varying lengths. Swanson (2) has further observed that chains 4 to 6 glucose units in length give no color with iodine, c...

Iodine Concentration in Iranian Dairy Milk Products and Its Contribution to the Consumer’s Iodine Intake

BACKGROUND:Due to the large proportion of iodine present in milk and dairy products, they have been one of the important sources of nutritional iodine in several countries. Information about variation in milk iodine concentration in Iran is limited. OBJECTIVES:The present study was conducted to determine the iodine concentration in Iranian milk and dairy ...

The effect of contrast agent on delivered dose during diagnostic imaging of thoracic region

This study evaluated the impact of contrast material on the estimation of absorbed dose due to computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) using the ICRP reference phantoms. To address this issue, we modified the previously developed physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to be conformed to the ICRP reference phantoms. Regarding the standard contrast material injection protocol...

Concentration of serum total iodine and thyroid hormones in Holstein cows in central Iran

The aim of this study was to evaluate total iodine, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) status in the blood serum of Holstein cows on six farms in central Iran. Total iodine, T3 and T4 concentrations were measured in 90 blood serum samples (15 per farm). Mean concentrations of total iodine (38.80 ± 1.52 µg/l) and T3 (1.57 ± 0.10 nmol/l) were lower but the mean concentration of T4 (45.60 ± ...
